Shower Hacks For Curly Hair
Super soak your hair
If you have low porosity hair like me then you have an extremely difficult time getting moisture into your hair, the best way that I’ve done to help my hair absorb as much moisture as possible is to soak my hair under the water for 5 minutes or more.
I make sure the water is warm, not hot and not cold. and I also squeeze the water into my hair so that it really gets deep and is able to open up my hair shaft. This is probably the most important part of my shower routine because in order for my conditioner to penetrate my hair shaft must be opened.
Even if you don’t have low porosity hair you can benefit from this hack but you want to make sure you seal your hair shaft after conditioning by rinsing your hair under cold water before you get out of the shower.
Water and conditioner is key
Now if you have curly hair then you already know how difficult it can be to get your hair detangled, especially if it’s been in a certain style for a long period of time. Detangling your hair in the shower while it is full of conditioner is the best way that I’ve found to detangle my hair.
This is great for a few reasons:
The conditioner will give your hair more slip that just using water and it will make it easier for you to get through any knots and/or tangles you have.
Combing your hair while it’s wet will ensure that you aren’t combing out your curls and their natural curl pattern so you won’t end up looking like a chia pet.
If you comb your hair while it wet you want to make sure that you are being more gentle with your hair because it is weaker when it’s wet. Also because yanking at your hair just isn’t comfortable.
Deep condition in the shower
So by now you know how important it is for you to deep condition your curly hair because as we all know curly hair is naturally dryer than other hair types.
And I know how much of a hassle it can be to get in the shower and wash your hair and then get back out of the shower and deep condition your hair and wait 45 minutes for the conditioner to sink in and then had to jump back in the shower to rinse it out or wash it out and then have to get back out of the shower to style it.
I know it is a vicious cycle and it is a long process. So this next curly hair hack for the shower is for you to deep condition your hair while you are in the shower instead of waiting until you get out of the shower.
This will keep you from having to get in and out of the shower and also save you time. So how exactly do you go about doing this? Well, let me tell ya!
The first thing you want to do when you get in the shower is wash your hair and detangle it. Then once your hair is completely clean and detangled you add in your deep conditioner.
Put it your hair into a bun on the top of your head and cover it with a shower cap and then continue with your shower as usual. I’m not saying you have to take a 45-minute shower because the steam from the shower will open up your hair cuticle and will allow the deep conditioner to penetrate the cuticle. This means you can actually cut your 45 minutes deep conditioning time into 15 or 30 minutes.
Then once you’re done with all of your other shower activities all you have to do is rinse the conditioner out of your hair and get out of the shower and you’re done!
Use your conditioner as a styler
This next hack is something that I personally use all the time because, number one I don’t like spending a lot of money on products and number two I’m really just lazy.
Using your conditioner as a styler may seem a little odd to some of you who are used to having different products for each step of your curly hair routine but it has done wonders for my curly hair.
The method that I use in my curly hair routine is actually a part of the tightly curly method which I talk about in my Caring for Curls email course.
Basically it’s when you put a ton of conditioner into your hair but you don’t rinse it out, you just leave it in your hair and use that as your styler. The reason why this is a curly hair hack is because it saves you money because you don’t have to buy other products to style your hair with and number two it saves you time because you can use your conditioner to condition your hair in the shower and you can also use it to style it out of the shower.
Having conditioner in your hair will weigh your curls down and make them predictable, however, throughout the week they will start to fluff up and get bigger so you don’t have to worry about your hair being flat all week.
Add your styling products in the shower
If you’re better than me and you don’t want to use your conditioner as a styler there is another hack that you can use to save you time and that is to use your styling products in the shower instead of adding them when you get out of the shower.
The work of conditioning your hair and keeping it moisturized does not end when you get out of the shower, you still have to make sure that moisture is getting into the hair cuticle especially if you have low porosity hair like me.
Applying your styling products in the shower has the same effect as deep conditioning in the shower, because of the steam from your shower your hair cuticle is already open and will make it easier for the moisture from your products to get into your cuticle and really moisturize your hair from the inside.
I understand this might get kind of messy especially if you use a variety of different products in your curly hair routine but I do recommend trying it out nonetheless.
Alright beauties that is it for this post!
