How you can master eyeliner as a complete beginner | appyling eyeliner for beginners

Appyling eyeliner for beginners

Step 1: Choose your eyeliner

There are three main types of eyeliner that you can choose from and I’m going to list them here in the order that I would recommend to a beginner. They each have their own pros and cons which we are also going to talk about:

Pencil eyeliner: I think this one is the best for beginners because you have the most control over what you’re doing however because it is a pencil you have to make sure the tip is sharp. If not it will make creating sharp lines very difficult.

Gel eyeliner: With this type of eyeliner you have a little bit less control than you do with pencil liner but it’s a lot easier to get a sharp line with gel liner because you use a brush and you don’t have to worry about sharpening it every 5 seconds.

Liquid eyeliner: Liquid eyeliner gives you the least amount of control and I don’t recommend this type to beginners at all. But again it’s easier to get a sharp line using liquid liner and once you have more experience creating your wings you’ll probably graduate to either gel or liquid liner.

Step 2: Find your edge (literally)

This is one of the first hacks I used when I was learning how to do eyeliner. Some might call this cheating but I like to call it utilizing all of your resources.

Your first option is using a piece of tape which is probably the easier because you don’t have to hold it up to your eye you can just stick the tape on your face. You’re going to want to stick it close to your eye in the angle you want your wing to be.

I recommend sticking it at an angle that goes out from your eye up towards your eyebrow.

Your second option is to use a business card and hold it up to your eye at the same angle you would stick the tape and create your wing that way.

Step 3: Set the foundation

At this point, the really hard part is over. Now what you want to do is draw a straight line along whatever edge you chose, the tape or the card, going from the outer corner of your eye up toward your eyebrow.

If you’re worried about messing up try using short strokes instead of just drawing the line all at once.

Also if you feel like your line isn’t as straight or as sharp as you want it to be, don’t worry we’re going to clean it up later.

Right now we’re just getting the shape we want.

Step 3: Connect the line

Now, using those same short strokes you used for the base of your wing, you’re going to draw a line going from the inner corner of your eye to the line that you just created on the outer corner of your eye.

You want to keep the line pretty thin on the inner corner and then make it thicker as you move toward the outer corner.

Take your time with this and make short slow strokes. This will make it easier for you to not mess up.

This is probably the easiest part so enjoy this.

Step 4: Draw the V

Now, this part can get a little tricky so take this slow.

You want to draw a sideways V on the outer corner of your eye. This V is going to connect the end of your wing, the part that is closest to your eyebrow, to the middle of your eye.

Again remember to use short strokes and take your time, there’s no rush.

Also, don’t worry if the wings don’t look completely identical unless it’s a really big difference most people won’t even notice.

Once you’ve drawn the sideways V all you have to do is fill it in and you’re pretty much done because the next step is optional.

Step 5: Concelear

This next step is if you made a mistake or if you want your line to look sharper.

All you have to do is take some of your concealer on a flat brush and sharpen up the line. Then once you’re done you just blend the concealer into your skin and no one’s the wiser.

I tend to do this a lot because I still make mistakes on my eyeliner but it’s all about practice.

I suggest practicing your eyeliner every day because the more you do it the better you will get at it and one day you won’t even have to use tape anymore!

Well beauties, that is it for this post on applying eyeliner for beginners.

Remember, practice makes perfect so don’t be too hard on yourself if you can’t get it right about because it’s just like any other skill.
